Puyo Puyo Tetris: Two games are better than one

This game was logged in for roughly 10 hours on Steam.

Review:

What do you get when you unite one of the best-selling puzzle games of all time with SEGA’s twist on puzzles? The answer is the very weird, yet very talented collaboration game: Puyo Puyo Tetris. What started as something only found in dreams was quickly showcased during the final stretch of the Wii U’s life in Japan. Eventually, it became available here in the States and worldwide when the Switch launched globally in 2017. Since then have been released on various other platforms and granted a sequel a few years later, making this collaboration game a major success.

The game is simple to learn, but hard to master, due to the fact it combines the block stacking rules of Tetris and the blob-fitting rules of Puyo Puyo into a fast-paced puzzle where you need to be both quick and smart about where everything needs to go. Plus, for those who don't know either rule, you can always play solo with either Tetris or puyo puyo rules. Plus there are various mini-game modes, online modes to play against friends, and a story mode where characters associated with both games clash together and have to find a way to get things back to normal.

The in-game sounds are very simplified and contain unique effects for both Puyo Puyo’s and Tetris's gameplay, and the music is a nice balanced mix of the two-game franchises. There are various music tracks you get from the get-go, and there are some you can unlock by playing through the story mode. There are also those you can buy in the in-game store with regular points, with no real-world money involved.

The graphics and the art style are actually pretty cute when you see it. Not only do the actual blobs and blocks look and feel both tight and firm, but also the background elements and the characters have that storybook feel to them. This then gives off a soft and borderline wholesome vibe to the game itself. A vibe that says “Don't worry about things, just relax with a game of puyo puyo Tetris”.

Wrapping up, this is a game that showcases the harmony of both puzzle series while showcasing the balance of playing both styles at once. Simple to learn, hard to master/perfect for playing solo and with your friends. Next time this game goes on sale, I highly recommend grabbing it for your system of choice. I guarantee that you will NOT regret it.
