State of Play 2/12/25 review: Better then others, but not good enough
This showcase ran for 46 minutes on Febuary 12th, 2025
Review:
The time has come again for Sony to unveil a new State of Play, and like before, It’s time to go through it and see what Sony and their partners have been cooking up.
First thing first is one last trailer for Capcom’s upcoming hunting game Monster Hunter Wilds, showcasing all its glory before the game launches on February 28th. All the glory of facing down its monsters with your friends is something that would get many long-time players pumped up for. Plus, Capcom also announced it’s first free post-launch update for the spring, featuring the monster Mizutzune. Capcom, in this stream, has also showcased two more games, both from the Onimusha franchise. First, was a remaster of the PS2 game Onimusha 2, coming later in May, and after that, checking out the brand new Onimusha: Way Of The Sword game that comes out in 2026, so that’s a while away. I love the fact that Capcom has a lot for the PS5, PC, and their other partners, and showcased that they’ll be an invaluable studio for all players.
From SEGA’s corner, they have a lot to showcase as well. Showcased from the Game Awards, we have the new Sonic racing game: Sonic Racing CrossWorlds. It features more characters at first glance, transformable rides based on the new environments similar to Sonic and SEGA all-stars Racing Transformed, and more. While not having a release date, it will showcase a network test later this month. There is also a new Shinobi game from the Streets of Rage 4 developers, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is getting a demo, and Yakuza is getting a crossover with the indie game Dave the Diver. All of these are just as awesome as the Capcom stuff, and there's plenty to get excited about with SEGA’s upcoming titles.
Even Konami had a few surprises to showcase here, including the release date for Metal Gear Solid Delta, a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, now coming this August 28th. It’s supposed to be a remake of one of the best games ever made and I can't wait to check it out. They went as far as to reintegrate the Snake vs Monkey minigames that feature Sony’s Ape Escape franchise. Plus Konami didn't stop there as they revealed a brand new game in the mix called Darwin’s Paradox, which is a 2D platformer where an octopus named Darwin tries to escape an evil food processing plant before aliens can rule the world. Despite not having as much as Capcom and SEGA, Konami came in strong and they ended up surprising people, hoping that this was a sign that they might return to the good old days.
Other games that were shown off include a brand new Digimon game called Digimon Story: Time Stranger, a new look at Borderlands 4 (now with a release date: September 22nd), a new indie horror called The Midnight Walk, which is made entirely out of claymation, and Warriors Abyss, a rogue-like twist on an iconic franchise with its 1-v-many combat styles. We also have debuts of MindsEye, a shooter game that mixes shooting with high-speed chases, another reveal called Metal Eden that has some interesting sci-fi shooter elements mixed with parkour and launches May 6th, a new Five Nights at Freddy’s game called Secret of the Mimic, and a brand new trailer called Hell Is Us, a cryptic exploration game that launches in September. We even have some new information on some already-released games, like a prequel DLC for Lies of P named Overture, a new colab with Stellar Blade with Nikke which also announced a PC port of Stellar Blade for this June, plus many other games.
Last but not least is a game reveal a game from the Returnal Developers is a brand new game called Saros. Not much is known about it, but we do know that it faces a man vs god scenario as a soldier named Arjun Devraj faces off against monsters during an eclipse. There will be more to come later this year before the game launches in 2026.
Overall, there were a lot of wins for smaller games and third-party titles, but not alot that makes the PlayStation worth getting. Lots of ports, multi-platforms, and remakes alike that won't help get people to get a PS5, but I can’t fault them for trying. Hoping we get more info on much-anticipated games like Wolverine later this year.
