State of Play 6/2/26 review: Starting the Summer Strong
This showcase ran for 117 minutes on June 2th, 2026
Review:
June is here once more, and to fans of gaming, this means the biggest updates in the industry are upon us. And as per tradition, Sony takes the first watch as the new State of Play is live. They’ve been hyping up this one for a while, and they're even putting this in theaters. So let's see what Sony has to offer for the future of PlayStation.
Starting things off, we have a brand new look at Insomniac’s newest game: Marvel’s Wolverine. Showcasing roughly 10 minutes of brand new gameplay and story where Wolverine is trying to save mutant prisoners from being shipped off to who knows where, and joining him is Jean Grey, an iconic mutant from Marvel. Featuring the combos from the Spider-Man games, but ramped up tremendously to showcase blood and gore through Wolverine’s vicious fighting style, and even appearances of other iconic Marvel characters such as Sabertooth, Mystique, Omega Red, Leech, and even some Sentinels. Marvel’s Wolverine launches only on PS5 on September 15th, 2026.
And speaking of Marvel, we have been blessed to get 3 new characters in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, completing the Knights of Doom team in-game. Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage are all joining this extravagant fighting game, with each bringing their own unique movesets to this game. Magneto controls metal at will, Green Goblin zips on by and bombs people, and Carnage is a walking blender of symbiotic blades and fangs. Only a few characters are left to be revealed, and it's kind of fun speculating who's joining this game. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is coming to PS5 and PC on August 6th, 2026.
After all that, we get the surprise reveal that Rayman Legends is getting a remake, appropriately titled Rayman Legends Retold. Experience the iconic game, now told in a 3D environment with new cutscenes, levels, and even new ways to experience this game. This game even comes with a remastered Rayman Origins game, so you can feel free to jump in and explore Rayman’s home. Rayman Legends retold launches this October on all major platforms, including PS5.
Up next, we have a Dave the Diver prequel game, titled Bancho the Chef. This prequel game stars Bancho as he gets his start making sushi, taught by a master chef. Bancho the Chef currently has no release window, but you can wishlist it now on PS5.
Next, we have a brand new game in the works called Kemuri, and that handles yokai hunters hunting down unseen forces that threaten our way of life. Play from 3 different classes as you and your buddies work together to vanquish these demonic intruders, and even steal their powers for yourself to help better defend the innocent. Kemuri launches on PS5 in 2027.
Following that, we have a reveal of a new Tomb Raider remake, titled Legacy of Atlantis. This game faithfully remakes the original 1996 game as you explore one of Laura’s earliest adventures in Unreal Engine 5. I would have been more excited for this game, but it has been confirmed that AI has been used to make this game. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches on all platforms February 12th, 2027.
Up next, we have the reveal of Annapurna’s newest game: The Lost Wild. This game explores a world where dinosaurs came back from extinction, and you must try to find a way to survive this new experience. Not much is known about the game, but I would like to see more. The Lost Wild launches on PS5 in 2027.
Next up, we have a new look at the upcoming game Phantom Blade 0. Not much was shown here aside from its combat system and the mysterious protagonist, but the developers did say that the full trailer and pre-order launch are set to be revealed later this summer.
Afterwards, we have a brand new look at the upcoming RPG, Dune Awakening, based on the books and the movies. Explore the desert world of Arrakis, learn how to survive against your enemies, and uncover mysteries that people would kill to protect.
Next, we have a new look at Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered. Take command of legendary generals as you fight through hordes of cannon fodder in this spectacular remake of the original Dynasty Warriors 3 game. It's great to see series like these get new versions for a new generation of players to go through. Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered launches on PS5 and other systems on October 1st.
After that, we have No Rest For The Wicked, a top-down angle adventure game that's like a mix between Diablo and Dark Souls, including down to the combat. While you can play the PC version now, the 1.0 update is currently coming to PS5, which is a good chance to give it a try now on PC, or in October on PS5, complete with cross-save and cross-progression.
Capcom also shows up to showcase a new look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword, where lone samurai Miyamoto Musashi is forcefully fused to an Oni Gauntlet as he fights his way through the demonic forces in the Edo period through his swordsmanship and demonic powers with his new gear. Capcom has been releasing banger after banger this year, and I think Onimusha is gonna be great as well. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Steam on September 25th, 2026. There's even a free demo out now if you’re curious about the game.
We have another look at the upcoming Silent Hill game, Silent Hill Townfall, starring a new protagonist and a new location. In this standalone game set in the same universe, you must help Simon Ordell figure out where he is and what connection he has to the place. It's a perfect game for newcomers and survival horror experts alike to play, and it’s coming to PS5 and PC on September 24th, 2026.
After that, we have our first look at Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. Set during an unnamed war, it follows a lone fighter pilot who has to take up a false name in order to inspire hope in a seemingly unwinnable battle, with your trusty mates in the sky helping however they can. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on PS5 on October 2nd, 2026, but the deluxe edition lets you play a few days early. And as a bonus, there's also the reveal of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, which can only be obtained by preordering the game.
Next up, we have the reveal of Stuntman Hollywood, a driving game where you need to command iconic cars of pop culture as you tackle dangerous stunts in order to get that perfect shot for the film. From the Delorean Time Machine, to Kitt and even cars from Miami Vice, Fast and Furious, and Mad Max, this game has something for all fans. Stuntman Hollywood is coming soon to PS5.
We are then treated to a new trailer of ILL, a new first-person horror game where you need to take on demented and mutated forces of humanity, where every bullet, every swing, and every step could be the difference between life and death. ILL is coming to PC and PS5 in the future, but you can wishlist it now.
After that, we are then presented with a new look at Control Resonant, an upcoming mind-bending action game made by the talented folks at Remedy. For this, explore a new state of reality as you battle through trippy effects in order to find your sister through a mess of matter. It looks really fun, but you might need to play the first game in order to understand this one. Control Resonant comes out on September 24th, 2026.
There are also quite a few games coming to PlayStation Plus, as a nice surprise. We are getting Runescape: Dragonwilds, Gitaroo Man, Psi-ops: the Mindgate Conspiracy, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.
After that, we have the surprise new reveal of Until Dawn 2, a new horror game that's different from the first with its all-new cast and location, but still hiding dark secrets underneath. Depending on how you play, you can have everyone live or no survivors at all. Until Dawn 2 will officially drop next year with no solid date.
And to top the show off, we have a huge, 20+ minute showcase at the new God of War, titled God of War: Laufey, starring the deceased Faye as she traverses the afterlife, fighting off other gods from different mythologies to try to restore balance and get back to her husband and son. It’s just as violent as the other games, complete with mythological nonsense, and Jack Quaid even plays a gelatinous cube. This game looks pretty exciting, but I won't be able to play this for a long while, as I am currently going through the Greek saga at the time of writing this article. Luckily for me, there’s no release window, so that gives me plenty of time to catch up.
In conclusion, this State of Play gave the people what they asked for, and so much more, with all of these games and DLC coming out soon. It’s a great start to this non-E3 gaming announcement week, and more amazing shows are to come. For now, Sony deserves a bow for how well they made this work.
